Learnlight Achieves CarbonNeutral® Company Certification

  • Corporate Social Responsibility

We have received our CarbonNeutral® Company certification for the second consecutive year. This certification is a globally recognized standard for carbon neutrality achieved by minimizing our carbon footprint, and contributing to specific carbon offsetting projects, in line with The CarbonNeutral Protocol.

Explore what carbon offsetting really means and the project we invested in this year to offset our carbon emissions: The Gyapa Efficient Cookstove Project

Offsetting our Carbon Footprint

Carbon offsetting works by counterbalancing the greenhouse gas emissions from our activities, investing in projects that either reduce or remove an equivalent amount of carbon from the atmosphere. This helps even out the emissions we produce.

Rupert Hillier, COO at Learnlight:At Learnlight we aim to minimize our environmental impact and specifically our carbon footprint through sustainable work practices. Last year we reduced our carbon footprint to just 144 tCO2e. Carbon offsetting is a great way to proactively compensate for these remaining emissions, and have a positive impact on local communities.”

Our Community-Based Project

To offset our emissions this year, we invested in the Gyapa Efficient Cookstoves Project in Ghana. The project aims to improve the health and livelihoods of local communities in the area by providing locals with clean and efficient cookstoves.

Traditional cookstoves used in rural Ghana are often inefficient and produce high levels of smoke and other pollutants. This translates into health risks for families and contributes to deforestation and climate change. Gyapa cookstoves, on the other hand, use less fuel, saving families more than $165 million on fuel bills, and emits fewer harmful pollutants. Therefore, this initiative helped reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and protect local forests. It also provided employment opportunities for locals manufacturing and retailing the stoves.

Rupert Hillier, COO at Learnlight: “The Gyapa Efficient Cookstoves project is a great example of how carbon reduction projects can have a positive impact on local communities while contributing to our global efforts of combating climate change.”
