Enhancing Global Collaboration Through Language Learning

In today’s globalized world, businesses operate across borders more than ever before and effective communication has become even more important. Yet language and cultural barriers remain a costly challenge for many organizations. According to Statista and Grammarly, in Germany alone, employees lose an average of two hours per week—adding up to 11.5 days per year—due to ineffective communication.

The Role of Language in Global Teams

As companies expand across borders, teams often find themselves working across different time zones and cultural contexts. In such settings, language proficiency becomes more than just a tool for communication; it is the foundation upon which trust, collaboration, and innovation are built. Without a common linguistic framework, misunderstandings can arise, leading to inefficiencies and missed opportunities.

A Case Study: TecAlliance’s Commitment to Improving Global Collaboration

TecAlliance, a software company, was founded in Germany in 1994 with fewer than 10 employees. The company has since grown into a truly global organization, now employing more than 1,000 people across four continents. With this rapid expansion came a new challenge: ensuring teams across different countries, cultures, and time zones could communicate and collaborate effectively.

“We are a company founded in Germany. We have employees who started their jobs a few years ago in a purely German environment. How can we enable them to continue to do their jobs successfully in an international environment? That was the concrete challenge,” said Andrea Soldat, responsible for transformation at TecAlliance.

Rapid international growth meant that employees needed a common language for smooth communication and collaboration. English was chosen as the corporate language, creating the foundation for intercultural teamwork.

Launching a Global Learning Program

The program launched in March 2024 with around 200 participants using Learnlight’s platform. Learners were first assessed for their English proficiency to identify baseline levels. They were then organized into small cohorts of four to six participants, taking into account language level, time zones, and personal availability.

The program combined weekly group sessions or one-to-one training with digital self-study modules. The blended approach allowed learners to practice speaking in a safe environment, consolidate learning independently, and receive personalized guidance when needed. This design ensured that learning was interactive, practical, and flexible.

Learning was treated as part of employees’ work responsibilities rather than an optional task. Each participant was allocated two hours per week during working hours—equivalent to 11.5 days annually—to focus on the program. Supervisors were actively involved in supporting their teams, reinforcing the importance of prioritizing learning and helping employees integrate new skills into their daily work.

Group sessions provided a supportive environment for confidence-building, while learners with very low entry levels received individual training before joining group sessions. Frequent travelers were offered fully digital licenses through Learnlight, allowing them to continue learning on the go without missing key sessions.

Strategic Implementation and Outcomes

Learnlight’s analytics tool played a central role in tracking progress and informing decision-making. Metrics such as attendance, session completion, course milestones, and skill development were monitored continuously.

Andrea implemented a traffic light system to classify learners: green for strong performers, yellow for those needing additional support, and red for learners requiring extra guidance. This approach allowed timely interventions and helped ensure that participants stayed on track toward measurable language goals.

Beyond tracking progress, the program provided insights into learning engagement patterns, helping the company adjust cohort sizes, session timing, and coaching intensity based on real-world usage and feedback. This adaptive approach allowed the program to remain effective across diverse teams with varying needs.

After one year, most learners who followed the program advanced at least one English level. Participants reported higher confidence in speaking and valued opportunities to connect with colleagues across regions. In addition to measurable language gains, the program delivered a 96% session satisfaction rate and a 92% activity satisfaction rate, underscoring both the effectiveness of the learning design and the positive learner experience.

“Language is the foundation for everything else to happen,” said Andrea. Intercultural skills and interpersonal competencies, such as conflict management and relationship building, will   the next focus once a common language has been established.
